About the Department
The Department of Biochemistry at IIMSR (Integral Institute of Medical Sciences & Research), Integral University, Lucknow occupies a pivotal role in the MBBS curriculum, providing Phase I students with a thorough grounding in the molecular and chemical processes that underpin human health and disease. The department imparts knowledge across Carbohydrate, Lipid, and Protein Metabolism; Molecular Biology and Genetics; Clinical Biochemistry; Enzymology; Vitamins and Minerals; and Hematological Biochemistry.
With an annual intake of 250 MBBS students and 5 MD/MS postgraduate scholars, the department offers a stimulating academic environment guided by 8 experienced faculty members whose qualifications span MD Biochemistry and PhD Medical Biochemistry. The department prides itself on blending rigorous didactic teaching with competency-based practical training that equips students to interpret clinical laboratory data with confidence.
The department operates a well-equipped Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory, a dedicated Research Laboratory, and a Central Clinical Laboratory. The UG Lab is outfitted with colorimeters, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and other instruments that meet National Medical Commission (NMC) compliance standards. The Research Lab houses advanced analytical equipment for ongoing faculty and student research projects.
The Central Clinical Laboratory is a significant institutional asset, housing fully automated analyzers including the Cobas b 221 (blood gas and electrolyte analysis) and Vitros 4600 (comprehensive clinical chemistry and immunoassay panel). These instruments enable rapid, high-throughput diagnostic testing that directly supports patient care across IIMSR's associated hospital.
Research in the department spans metabolic disorders, diabetes, oxidative stress, cancer biology, molecular genetics, and medical education innovation. Faculty actively publish in Scopus-indexed journals and participate in national and international conferences, while students engage in guided research projects that develop their scientific inquiry skills.
